John Lennon: Power to the People – The Ultimate Collection

Auch dieses Box-Set hat es wieder in sich. Die Super Deluxe Ausgabe besteht aus 9 CDs und 3 BluRays. Insgesamt beinhaltet es 123 unterschiedliche Tracks. Vom „One to One“-Konzert sind es 47 Tracks, die sich auf 3 CDs verteilen. Die erste CD komplett obsolet, da es eine „Hybrid CD“ aus den CDs 2 und 3 ist. Die CD 2 enthält die Afternoon Show, die CD 3 die Evening Show.

Traurigerweise wird das Album „Sometime In New York City“ zu einem Bonus-Album für das One to One Konzert degradiert. Das finde ich, trotz der Schwächen des Albums, schade. Der Song „Woman is the Nigger of the World„, der sowohl auf beiden Konzerte gespielt und auf dem STINYC-Album veröffentlicht wurde, wurde komplett eliminiert. Das Gleiche gilt für den Yoko Ono Song „Sisters O Sisters„. Dieser Song wurde neben „Woman is the Nigger of the World“ aus dem „Ono To One“-Konzert entfernt. Ein Erläuterung habe ich bisher nicht gefunden. Hätte man eine, dann könnte man die Entscheidung zumindest nachvollziehen, so bleibt nur Spekulation. Schade.

1972 wurde der Song „Woman is the Nigger of the World„, übrigens mit „Sisters O´Sisters“ als B-Seite, als Vorab-Single für das Album veröffentlicht und bei der Dick Cavett Show im TV präsentiert. In den letzten Jahrzehnten war es auch nie ein Problem diesen Song auf dem Album zu lassen, auch auf den einschlägigen Streamingportalen ist der Song nach wie vor verfügbar, ohne dass das entsprechende Wort weggepiept wird oder im Titel unleserlich gemacht wird.

Das Album heißt nun auch nicht mehr „Some Time in New York City“. In der Box wird die CD nur knapp als „New York City“ bezeichnet. Es entsteht der Eindruck als solle das Album komplett aus dem Kanon Lennons gelöscht werden.

Da wirkt der Satz „New York City: the much anticipated re-imagining of the Sometime in New York City album with accompanying Evolution and Elements Mixes.“ in der Produktbeschreibung genauso wie das was er ist: Inhaltsleerer Marketing Sprech at-its best und schon fast eine Art Sprechdurchfall.

Trotzdem wird dem Album in der Box über vier CDs Raum gegeben, denn das „One to One“-Konzert ist mit den ersten drei CDs abgehandelt. Es finden sich in der Box keinerlei Aufnahmen von den Rehearsals zu dem Konzert und die gab es, wie auf mehreren Bootlegs dokumentiert worden ist.

Was ich auch verwirrend finde ist, dass mit dem Prinzip der vorherigen „Ultimate Collections“ gebrochen wird. Zu keinem der Songs der CD „New York City“ gibt es einen Outtake, einen Raw Take oder Elements Mix. Einzig die „Evolution Documentary“ wurde beibehalten.

Was fehlt sind die Auftritte in der Mike Douglas Show im Februar 1972, die im Januar 1972 aufgezeichnet wurden. So entgehen den Fans die Songs:

  • Midsummer New York – Yoko Ono
  • Imagine
  • Sisters O´ Sisters – Yoko Ono
  • Memphis, Tennessee (with Chuck Berry)
  • Johnny B. Goode (with Chuck Berry)
  • The Luck Of the Irish
  • Sakura Sakura – Yoko Ono

Es gibt aber Gerüchte aus dem offiziellen John Lennon Forum, dass diese Songs später auf einer EP erscheinen könnten. Aber eben alles nur Gerüchte.

Der Auftritt bei der Dick Cavett Show am 26 Mai 1972 fiel ebenso unter den Tisch, bei dieser Gelegenheit wurde der Song gespielt, der nicht mehr sein soll, es entgeht den Fans eine Live Version von „We´re All Water“ von Yoko Ono.
